What is Managed Services?
Managed IT Services is an catch-all term used for a range of services. It may be explained as external experts assuming responsibility for some or all of your IT operations. Examples can range from a consultant hired to assist with gathering tedious auditing data, advising your company on cloud cost optimization to a multi-month joint project performing a migration from the data center to the cloud.
Partially Managed IT Services
Services and responsibilities extend beyond monitoring where the consultant may be expected proactively solve issues when they arise. The consultant may be involved with assisting users who may need to apply patches to a database, gather audit data for reporting or setup one off services.
Monitoring Services
In this role the consultant will act as the ‘eyes and ears’ for the company while providing monitoring. They will alert the internal IT team upon discovering any issues or take action at the negotiated rate depending on the defined scope.
There are no downsides to being proactive.

Partially Managed IT Services
The external consultant in this scenario will play a limited role in operations. They may provide day to support from adding users, applying a patch or handling complex IT issues allowing the internal IT team to focus on other tasks.
Comprehensive/Full Managed IT Services
In this example the external consultants will handle all of the company’s IT operations.
Comprehensive Managed IT Services
In this role the external consultants will handle all of the company’s IT operations during the negotiated period. This may be for the lifetime of an ongoing project, support after the project has completed or an agreed upon block of hours per month or year. The consultant will typically be involved in all things IT while ensuring the environment’s overall health.
Pricing Models
Actual pricing may vary from one customer to another depending on the complexity of the environment. Below gives you a brief overview of different pricing models.
1. Flat-Based Range: Monthly, quarterly, or annual fee.
2. Per-Hour Range: usually billed in 15 minute increments
3. Per Server Range: a defined priced per server, per month
4. Block of hours: costs based on defined scope
